Setting: This book was set in modern day London England.
Analysing character:
The main character in this book is Janet hence the book title “Planet Janet” Janet is an ordinary teenager going through a typical teenage dark faze in her life, she is trying to read poetry listen to jazz music and wear dark clothing dragging her best friend Disha along for the ride. Janet is a strange girl she calls her mother mad cow and her father Sigmund. She likes to plot plans to fix her problems.
Construction of the story:
This book is a written diary so the order of events is in chronological order from Thursday 21st of December all the way until Friday the 4th of May. The main events can be told by the date so some important event would be the Christmas day where the granny gets introduced. And the day that her crush gets introduced and the times were Disha and Janet have a sleepover and nearly cause destruction every time.
Relationships:
I think that the main relationship in this book is the friendship between Janet and Disha the two best friends. There have been some slight hiccups along the way but they have always been able to get through it together. Like the false fire alarm in the middle of the night, which turned out to be smoke from the candles they were burning. They have stayed strong friends throughout this book.
Her relationship with her mother is extremely weird because Janet calls her mum mad cow and she always talks meanly towards her and also fights with her a lot! She doesn’t realise that her mum is just trying to help her and Janet doesn’t appreciate herlike she should. The mad cow also isn’t fond of her daughter she seems to find her annoying to.
Issues:
The current issues this book brought up for me was growing up how you not always going to get along with your family and there are going to be mistakes that you make but you just have to solder on and be strong I also think that this book brought up the issue of growing up to fast isn’t a good thing and I can really relate to that you see girls around you and it like they want to waist there childhood.
Personal response:
I really enjoyed this book because I could relate to a lot of it. It’s a girly teen book that is a fun and quick to read. I wouldn’t recommend it for girls under 12 years some of its content is inappropriate and there is some mild course language. I liked the style of writing because it was as if Janet had actually wrote it and most words were understandable. I especially liked that the book had some of the words in another font so that you could get the feel of its context like Romance or Dramatic etc. All up a really great book.
